Policy Objectives

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine awards tuition remissions to incoming and current medical students. Remissions are designed to competitively recruit students and obtain a globally diverse class. Remissions are intended to provide graduating students pursuit of career opportunities independent of financial circumstances. Awarding such remissions supports our admissions goals, which are as follows:

I. Recruit and retain the best and brightest Nebraska students who will serve their home communities and the state

II. Matriculate a balanced, unique and diverse medical school class full of talented individuals who will bring a global perspective to the College of Medicine

There are five separate tuition remission opportunities and qualification criteria are unique to each. Annually, the tuition remission types, selection criteria and goals are submitted to the Dean for review and approval for continued use.

I. Non-Resident Tuition Waiver (NRTW)

The Non-Resident Tuition Waiver (NRTW) is a remission available for non-resident students. The waiver allows the non-resident to attend UNMC at the current tuition rate of a Nebraska resident. This remission is guaranteed to the non-resident throughout all years of medical school providing they progress to the next academic level.

Evaluating Criteria for the NRTW is assessed by holistic review of information in the applicant’s medical school application. All non-residents are evaluated through this process. A sub-committee of the Admissions Committee, as appointed by the Associate Dean of Admissions, recommends the awardees. The number of non-resident tuition waivers is directed by the Dean.

II. Regents Tuition Waiver (RTW)

The Regents Tuition Waiver is a remission available for accepted Nebraska residents. This is a full tuition remission given to six students in each medical school class. The waiver recognizes six students in each class and is awarded based on academic measures, similar to GPA, and is reassessed annually.

III. Half Tuition Waiver (HTW)

The Half Tuition Waiver is a remission available for all accepted students. The HTW provides a tuition remission for half of the tuition for the year to the student. This waiver is reassessed annually based on academic measures, similar to GPA. This waiver is awarded to the twelve students in each class who do not get a Regents Tuition Waiver.

IV. China Scholarship Council Waiver (CSC)

The China Scholarship Council Waiver (CSC) provides our incoming CSC students the opportunity to attend medical school at the cost of resident tuition. This waiver supports the goal of creating a globally diverse medical school class. The COM accept two CSC students each academic year.

This application process is managed by the Vice Chancellors Office’s Asia Pacific Rim Development Program. Incoming CSC Medical students are selected by a sub-committee of the Admissions Committee and approved by the Associate Dean of Admissions.

The two CSC applicants selected that accept admission are awarded the CSC Waiver. This remission is guaranteed to the CSC students throughout all years of medical school, providing they progress to the next academic level.

V. MD/PhD Tuition Waiver (MD/PhD Waiver)

The MD-PhD Tuition Waiver is a remission available to a student accepted into the MD-PhD Scholars program. The MD-PhD Scholars student receive a waiver for each year of their medical school, providing they progress to the next academic level.

The criteria for evaluating and accepting an incoming MD-PhD Scholars student into the program is holistic review of information in the applicant’s medical school application by the MD-PhD Scholars Program Directors and Administrator.

VI. Notification of Tuition Waiver

Once any waiver is approved/awarded, student services will be notified of the individuals receiving each waiver.
