The Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library is the library of UNMC and the only state-supported academic health sciences library in Nebraska. The library completed a renovation in 2020 that optimized study space to include 53 study rooms and three Reflection Rooms. The library is located in Wittson Hall.

McGoogan Library Website

The McGoogan Library website serves as a gateway to online information resources. Online journals, books, and databases are available through the library website, and many are formatted for mobile devices. Online resources are available off-campus provided the user has a UNMC NetID and password. Social networking allows the library to keep library users informed via a blog, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Library Service Hours (excluding UNMC holidays)

Business Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
After Hours: Accessible with a UNMC ID Badge

Public spaces and study rooms on Level 6 and Level 7 are accessible 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for UNMC faculty, staff and students. Special Collections and Archives spaces are located on Level 8 and available by appointment (history@unmc.edu). A current UNMC ID badge is required for building access outside of the business hours listed above and should be worn and viewable while in the library.

Student Library Fee

A student fee, per credit hour, is assessed to all UNMC students for purchasing library collections. Regardless of campus location, students can access library collections. Students enrolled in online programs have the same online access as students physically located on other campuses of the University of Nebraska.

Borrowing Privileges

All UNMC students may borrow library materials by presenting their UNMC ID badge and completing additional registration information at the library’s AskUs Desk. Borrowing privileges will not be granted without a valid UNMC ID badge.

Loan Periods for Library Materials

  • Books: Two weeks with two renewals
  • Review Books: One week with one renewal
  • Print Journals: One week with two renewals
  • Anatomical models: One week with one renewal

Items may be renewed in-person at the AskUs Desk, by phone (402-559-6221) and online. Items may be renewed provided no one else has placed a hold on the item. Books in the general collection and anatomical models are available during library service hours. A courtesy reminder will be sent via email for overdue items.

Unpaid Library Charges

For lost items, the library will charge the full replacement cost, plus a processing fee.  Fees can be paid online.

If there are unpaid library fees on a student’s account, library borrowing privileges will be suspended and the student will not be able to register for classes, request transcripts, access records on the student website, or request any type of enrollment verification. Holds will also be placed on the student account for activities on other NU campuses.

Overdue fines are waived for items returned past their due date, but replacement billing procedures will begin after a period of time (see the library’s Borrowing Privileges policy under About Us on the library’s website).

Online Resources

The library collections include 37,000 electronic journals and 78,000 eBooks. The library also provides access to several literature databases, including MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, and Embase. Online articles are embedded within the literature databases via the GetIt!@UNMC button. Clinical resources, such as UpToDate, AccessMedicine, and LexiComp are also available. Library staff can assist in locating specific items. Online books, journals, and other resources can be found via the library’s website. Online resources require a UNMC Net ID and password for off-campus access.

Education & Research Services

Education and Research Services librarians are available to assist with information resources. Librarians also offer consultations for developing effective search strategies for information retrieval. Educational sessions are available for groups or individuals throughout the year.

Requests for these services can be made online through the library’s ILL page (located under Services on the library's website) or via the GetIt!@UNMC button found within literature databases. To create an account, log in with your UNMC NetID and password. Turnaround time for receipt of an article is usually 1-2 business days. There is no charge for this service.

UNMC Health Information Service

Do you need health information for patients or a patient’s family? The library provides information at no charge through the Health Information Service. A librarian will research the condition and provide a tailored package of information that may include journal articles, book chapters, pamphlets, and web resources. This packet is provided for informational purposes only. More information on this service is available online.

Study Rooms

The library has 42 individual and 11 group study rooms that may be reserved through the UNMC room scheduling website. Study rooms have a four-hour maximum time limit on reservations within a 24-hour period. Reservations can be made within two weeks of the desired date of use.

Writing Center @ UNMC

Students are welcome to work with a writing consultant from the UNO Writing Center on any writing project. This free service is appropriate for writing assignments, application essays, business letters, or other projects. The Writing Center @ UNMC is sponsored by Academic Affairs. In-person and virtual appointments can be made online.

Jim and Karen Linder Maker Studio

The library’s Maker Studio is equipped with technology and other tools for the purpose of creation and prototyping educational, clinical, and research materials. Library staff facilitate access to the Maker Studio and provide workshops but may not necessarily have the skills to assist you with your project. All users are required to complete an in-person safety orientation. More information can be found online.

3D Printing

The library provides 3D printing services on demand to support students' research, educational, and clinical projects. Library staff can print 3D models from your design. The library welcomes prototyping and can advise on the potential success of prints.

Reflection Rooms

The library’s three Reflection Rooms, located on Level 7, are provided for quiet reflection and wellness. Rooms may contain massage chairs, yoga mats, soft lighting, and art. Reflection rooms may be reserved through the UNMC room scheduling website.

Dissertation/Thesis Binding

Upon request, the library will arrange for bound copies of student dissertations and theses. A fee of $25 per copy covers the cost of binding and processing. Students must provide paper copies for the bound volumes and can drop them off at the library’s AskUs Desk during regular service hours. Bound volumes can be picked up or mailed for a flat fee of $10 when ready. Request information and payment is made online. More information about the service can be found on the library’s website under the How Do I section.

Special Collections and Archives

The library collects historical materials such as UNMC archives, rare books and other historical works, materials related to the health sciences in Nebraska, and artifacts. Collections are accessible via appointment. Archivists and librarians can provide support for your historical research. Selected collections are showcased at the Wigton Heritage Center, Levels 3 through 5 in Wittson Hall and online under the Special Collections and Archives, Using the Collections section. Archivists and librarians can be reached at history@unmc.edu or by phone: 402-836-9538.
