Student Health Insurance & Access to Care
UNMC provides eligible students with access to a comprehensive health insurance plan through UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR), along with on‑campus and local care options.
Enrollment & Waiver
Enrollment/Waiver Period: Eligible students will be able to to enroll or waive 14 days prior to start of class during their designated enrollment waiver perio, enrolled into classes and student health insurance charges on their student account.
Students must confirm enrollment or submit a waiver through MyRecords.
Coverage is effective the first day of the month of the start of their semester, even if confirmation occurs later within the enrollment window.
International students must carry insurance with medical evacuation and repatriation benefits (included in the UNMC student health insurance plan).
Eligibility
Below are the categories of students who are eligible for and required to have UNMC Student Health Insurance.
- All domestic and international undergraduate or professional students enrolled full time, as defined by the UNMC Academic Course Load Policy
- Undergraduate nursing students enrolled in the traditional six‑semester program
- Graduate nursing students enrolled in six or more credit hours
- Other graduate students enrolled in nine or more credit hours
- Students enrolled in a PhD program
- MMI visiting scholars
Students enrolled in all‑online do not qualify for student health insurance.
Coverage Highlights

- Medical Insurance ID cards are available electronically after enrollment confirmation
- Dental ID cards are mailed 7 days after medical insurance enrollment is confirmed
Student Health Clinic
The Nebraska Medicine UNMC Student Health Clinic provides care to students who pay into Fund B. Fund B, mandated by the Chancellor and approved by the Board of Regents, supports Student Health operations. Fund B is a fee all students pay and not a medical insurance. Portions of this fund cover services rendered at the campus Student Health Clinic.

When the Student Health Clinic is unavailable, students are encouraged to use:
Nebraska Medicine Immediate Care Clinics
In‑network urgent care facilities
Emergency rooms for true emergencies
Students enrolled in the UNMC UHCSR plan, using Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center Emergency Room and Nebraska Medical and Bellevue Medical Center ICC locations and notifying Student Health within a week of discharge for a referral, may help reduce out‑of‑pocket costs.

Dependent Insurance
The United Healthcare Plan does offer dependent insurance. If the student is interested in purchasing an insurance plan for their dependents, once they are active in the United system, they may go ahead and enroll on the United Healthcare Company website: https://www.uhcsr.com/unmc/.
