An off-campus preceptorship is a pre-arranged four-week rotation occurring under the supervision of volunteer faculty not accessed through a third-party application platform, usually at a regional private clinic within the state of Nebraska. The ability to participate in an off-campus preceptorship is dependent on the Preceptor having an UNMC volunteer faculty appointment prior to the start date of the off-campus preceptorship.
Off-campus preceptorships meet the UNMC COM criteria for a sub-internship rotation. Each department offers an off-campus preceptorship course, the standardized course number is 764.
Approval and Scheduling Process
An off-campus preceptorship cannot be established within 8 weeks (about 2 months) of the off-campus preceptorship start date. The ability to participate in an off-campus preceptorship is dependent on the Preceptor having an UNMC volunteer faculty appointment prior to the start date of the off-campus preceptorship. The UNMC COM cannot complete the volunteer faculty appointment process in less than 8 weeks.
An UNMC COM Phase 3 elective of interest (second choice) must be scheduled through OASIS in advance of the off-campus preceptorship approval and scheduling process. Only after the approval of an off-campus preceptorship application can the off-campus preceptorship be administratively added to your schedule by the COM Office of Admissions and Students Affairs (OASA).
- Complete section 1 of the Off-Campus Preceptorship Application.
- Submit the away rotation application to the appropriate Phase 3 Career Specialty Track Director.
- The OASA will email a copy of the approved off-campus preceptorship application or notification of disapproval to you and the department upon completion of the process.
- If approved, the OASA will proceed with administratively dropping the currently scheduled UNMC COM elective and add the off-campus preceptorship to your schedule.
