NSURG 736 PEDIATRIC NEUROSURGERY 4 Credit Hours
ELECTIVE
This elective is designed for the student planning a career in neurosurgery, pediatrics, neurology (adult or pediatric) or neuropathology. Students with specific areas of interest, such as neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, surgical workup and management of epilepsy, brain and spine neoplasia, neurotrauma or neuroembryology, are especially encouraged to apply for this elective. Although there is more than ample time devoted to neuroradiology and neuropathology conferences, the principle thrust of this elective is to coherently integrate the student into the practice and theory of pediatric neurosurgery. Broad clinical exposure including patient clinics, operative experience, etc. is afforded to the student along with in-depth literature analysis. Rotations Offered: Each 4 weeks. Site: Children's Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Arnett Klugh and Dr. Afshin Salehi.
Typically Offered: FALL/SPR
Capacity: 1
NSURG 738 NEUROSURGERY 4 Credit Hours
SUB-INTERN
The Department of Neurological Surgery at UNMC offers a clinical clerkship to allow students interested in neurological surgery an opportunity to work with the faculty and residents in all aspects of the neurosurgery service. The goals of these interactions are to increase the medical knowledge of the students in the area of neuroscience, to gain early exposure of high-quality prospective applicants to the field of neurosurgery. The student can become an integral part of the care of our patients as they interact with the faculty and residents. Activities include conferences, case presentation, ICU and ward rounds, observing and assisting in the OR, taking call and outpatient clinics. Medical students will be involved in all aspects of the care of our elective neurosurgery practice, but also will be exposed to our emergent trauma and stroke population. Students can also be introduced to our advanced skull base lab. The medical students' expectations on the rotation will be refined by the chief residents under the direction of faculty neurosurgeons. In general terms, students are expected to round on the patients and present their findings to the team. They are expected to observe and, where appropriate, take part in neurosurgical procedures. Students are encouraged to take call. They are required to attend weekly conferences and encouraged to pick a topic that interests them and give a 15-20-minute topic presentation. Rotations Offered: Each 4 weeks. Site: Clarkson Doctor's Building South Tower, 8th Floor, Room 81117.

NSURG 764 NEUROSURGERY OFF-CAMPUS PRECEPTORSHIP 4 Credit Hours
SUB-INTERN
Members of the volunteer faculty of the Department of Neurosurgery offer preceptorial elective clerkships for students. Four services are available, one each with: Drs. Steve Doran, John Treves, Keith Lodhia, Bradley Bowdino, Guy Music, Jordan Lacy, Andrew Gard and Landon Ehlers, Omaha; Drs. Eric Pierson, Benjamin Gelber, Andrew Livingston, and Steve Gogela, Chris Hawkins and Jeremy Hosein, Lincoln; Drs. Daniel Tomes and Benjamin Bixenmann, Lincoln; Dr. Chinyere Obasi, Kearney. A responsible and acceptable faculty-in-absentia, who can assure an active clerkship and offer an evaluation of performance, must be identified prior to approval. An evaluation of the student's performance will be required upon completion and the student is responsible for assuring that the department receives the evaluation. Objectives: Become proficient with the neurological exam, be able to identify emergent neurosurgical conditions and propose management, and present on a neurosurgical topic. Rotations Offered: Each 4 weeks.
