ANES 720 ANESTHESIOLOGY ROTATION 4 Credit Hours
SUB-INTERN
The intention of this rotation is to provide a broad exposure to the field of anesthesiology. This rotation is for students both interested in pursuing a career in anesthesiology and those students who are interested in learning basic Anesthesiology concepts and knowing more about the interdisciplinary aspects of our specialty to become well rounded physician collaborators. Students will be given an opportunity to participate in the care of patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures. Students will be involved from pre-operative risk stratification to post-Anesthesiology recovery in the PACU or ICU with an emphasis on anesthetic management throughout this time. They will also gain exposure to Anesthesiology subspecialties by choosing from two one-week blocks in Acute Pain, Cardiac Anesthesiology, Obstetrical Anesthesiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology, Transplant Anesthesiology or Neuro Anesthesiology. This diverse experience will give the student an opportunity to learn about the perioperative clinical considerations of the patient, as well as provide them with hands-on technical skills. The student will engage in many procedures including airway management, peripheral nerve blocks, neuraxial anesthesiology, arterial and venous access, and transesophageal echocardiography. Other notable concepts addressed will be physiology, pharmacology, fluid management, and pain control as pertaining to Anesthesiology and beyond. Our rotation also utilizes the simulation lab to teach clinical and procedural skills. Students will be expected to participate in weekly case discussions and journal clubs to help deepen their understanding of the specialty. Rotations Offered: Each 4 weeks.

ANES 725 CRITICAL CARE ANESTHESIOLOGY 4 Credit Hours
SUB-INTERN
Critical Care Anesthesiology provides an opportunity to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team led by Anesthesiology-Intensivists to provide cutting edge, patient centered medical therapy to complex, critically ill patients. Learn to navigate the intricacies of multi-organ system dysfunction, sepsis, post-operative cardiac, thoracic and surgical oncology patients, as well as mechanical cardiopulmonary support. Engage in discussions of medical ethics, end of life issues, as well as analyze interpersonal and family dynamics in a high acuity environment. This four-week rotation is ideal for those medical students interested in anesthesiology, critical care medicine, internal medicine, cardiology, or surgery, or for students seeking a high-intensity educational exposure to the physiology and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and other major organ systems. The rotation will focus its curriculum on critical care topics with related reading scheduled lectures and bedside instruction of procedures such as central line catheter placement, arterial line insertion, intubation, echocardiography and head-to-toe critical care ultrasonography. Multidisciplinary academic rounds will take place daily, with scheduled lectures occurring three days per week on predesignated topics delivered during lunch by Critical Care Anesthesiology faculty.
