Medical students are expected to learn about the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with infectious diseases. However, some patients with certain infections require care that utilizes training or equipment outside of the scope of medical student education. Thus, medical students will not directly care for the following patients at this time (subject to change):
- Respiratory isolation (tuberculosis, disseminated varicella, etc.)
- Ebola, known or suspected
- MERS, known or suspected
- SARS, known or suspected
- Discretion of the supervising physician
- Other emerging infectious diseases as defined by the Dean’s office

Reporting for Possible Exposure
If there is a concern for a possible exposure while at Nebraska Medicine to any infectious agents please follow the exposure guidelines.
If it is determined you may have had an exposure after patient contact then you will be contacted by the department where the contact occurred. If medical care is required please contact Student Health Clinic (402-559-7204).
If your exposure occurs off-campus please report directly to your immediate supervisor and follow the instruction for exposure at the site. Any referrals or follow-up care will be determined in consultation with Student Health Services.
Extenuating Circumstances
Students may be asked to assist in the care of any patients, including those listed above, in extreme circumstances. In this situation, the COM leadership will specify appropriate student roles and provide instruction and training.
