ORTH 722 ORTHOPAEDIC SERVICE 4 Credit Hours

Objectives:¿Learn clinical evaluation of musculoskeletal disease in outpatient setting¿Understand basic principles of surgical treatment of orthopaedic conditions¿Gain experience in management of orthopaedic patients in the inpatient setting¿Become familiar with literature on one orthopaedic topic of interest and present ¿grand rounds¿ style presentation on this topic. Clinical Expectations:Student is to independently interview and examine patients in clinic. Present cases to staff in resident style.¿Minimum 4 presentations per rotation, Operating Room Expectations:The student is to read ahead and prepare for cases he/she will be involved in.¿Student should be familiar with surgical approaches and anatomy specific to team and cases they are involved in. Conference Schedule:¿Students will attend all resident and didactic teaching conferences¿Five medical student focused didactic lecturesoOne for each service given by faculty members¿Case based presentation on topic of choice picked by student and presented to faculty and housestaffo10 min. max.oGeneral outline :3 min. case presentation with images : 5 min. background and literature review : 2 min. discussion. ORTH 723 PEDS ORTHO SERVICE 4 Credit Hours

ELECTIVE

The purpose of this course is to introduce the interested student to the intricacies and problems associated with care of the child with musculoskeletal problems. Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery has become a unique subspecialty of orthopaedics, and thus those students interested in further study of the care of children and/or orthopaedics will find this rotation most beneficial. Activity-Hours/Week. Rounds-4. Didactic conferences-3. Independent learning-6. Research project-Variable Clinic-16 to 20. Operating Room-16 to 20.

This rotation is no longer available unless special arrangements are made with a UNMC Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Member and our Clinical Research Nurse, Dana Schwarz.
