NSURG 738 NEUROSURGERY 4 Credit Hours

ELECTIVE

The Department of Neurological Surgery at UNMC offers a clinical clerkship to allow students interested in neurological surgery an opportunity to work with the faculty and residents in all aspects of the neurosurgery service. The goals of these interactions are to increase the medical knowledge of the students in the area of neuroscience, to gain early exposure of high-quality prospective applicants to the field of neurosurgery. The student can become an integral part of the care of our patients as they interact with the faculty and residents. Activities include conferences, case presentation, ICU and ward rounds, observing and assisting in the OR, taking call and outpatient clinics. Medical students will be involved in all aspects of the care of our elective neurosurgery practice, but also will be exposed to our emergent trauma and stroke population. Students can also be introduced to our advanced skull base lab. The medical students' expectations on the rotation will be refined by the chief residents under the direction of faculty neurosurgeons. In general terms, students are expected to round on the patients and present their findings to the team. They are expected to observe and, where appropriate, take part in neurosurgical procedures. Students are encouraged to take call. They are required to attend weekly conferences and encouraged to pick a topic that interests them and give a 15-20 minute topic presentation.
