The invitation to appear before the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC, will be extended to any student who receives a grade of fail for a second Block, a grade of fail for a single Clerkship or elective and/or professionalism deficiencies. This includes students for whom such actions as notice of concern, probation, or dismissal are likely possibilities.
All student appearances before the SEC or a subcommittee of the SEC shall be arranged by the OASA. The student will be given at least two business days’ notice about the time and place of the meeting. The student is expected to confirm attendance by responding to the email calendar invite, prior to the meeting.
Appearance before the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC, is not mandatory. The decision of the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC is independent of the student appearing before the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC. The purpose of providing the student with access to the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC is to guarantee that all the information required is provided and to reassure the student that the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC actions will be careful and deliberate.
- Any student who accepts the invitation to appear before the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC, may have an advisor or counselor accompany the student if prior arrangements have been made with the Chair of the SEC.
- If extenuating circumstances arise, preventing the student from appearing at the scheduled time and place, the student must contact the OASA as soon as possible so that efforts can be made to reschedule their appearance before the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC.
- If a student does not communicate in advance of the scheduled time, the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC will proceed.
- If extenuating circumstances arise, preventing the student from appearing at the scheduled time and place, the student must contact the OASA as soon as possible so that efforts can be made to reschedule their appearance before the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC.
- Any student who declines the invitation to appear before the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC, may submit a statement in advance of the meeting time to the OASA for review by the SEC, or a subcommittee of SEC to clarify extenuating circumstances.
The declining of an invitation to appear before the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC or failure to appear before the SEC, or a subcommittee of SEC at the scheduled time is not grounds for an appeal of the decision of the SEC, or a subcommittee of the SEC.
